The Mediterranean Diet – The Perfect Diet

Is Your Diet Making You Old? Switch to Anti-Aging Food.

You are what you eat. GI-GO (Garbage In-Garbage Out.) What have you eaten today? A well balanced diet of whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables and fruits? Or was your breakfast a cup of coffee and a Danish or bagel with cream cheese? Or did you skip breakfast altogether? The Standard American Diet is Fast-Food-Crazy: greasy, fatty, and high in sugar. It is not rich in anti-aging foods. If these foods make up more than a tiny part of your diet, you may be eating yourself into an early grave. If you’re reading this still have plenty of life left, and your diet is the perfect place to begin to make some serious anti-aging changes. Just look at what it’s doing to you:

  • If your midsection is large, your risk of heart attack is elevated. Just a few pounds is all it takes.
  • If your diet is rich in salt, you’re destroying your kidneys, as well as some other organs.
  • If you are eating fatty foods, your heart is suffocating under layers of cholesterol.

If all this scares you, well, it should. But is a diet the answer? That depends on what you call “a diet.” To us, a diet means an extreme crash course that, while it may take off the pounds, it puts your health at risk. And emotionally, it makes you feel deprived, so you’re probably not going to stick with it. Even if you do stick with it and lose the pounds, you’ll probably go right back to overeating and wrong-eating and gain it all back. Then, a few months down the road, you’ll start to hate yourself because you’re such a wus, and do it all over again. Diets are everywhere you look. Maybe you’ve tried several. That’s called yo-yo dieting. You starve yourself and lose weight, then you’re dying for all the things you eliminated from your diet, so you overindulge and gain it all back. If your diet is high in protein you may be putting your heart at risk due to increased cholesterol. On the other hand, a low fat diet does the exact opposite. It deprives the body of protein, which builds muscle mass and burns fat faster. What if you don’t have a weight problem, but don’t eat as healthfully as you should? Is your food making you old? The best diet for your health and well being is the most basic one, and the easiest to follow. Read on…

The Perfect Diet

The Golden Agers Rock! Anti-Aging Formula does not include or advocate a specific diet, and certainly not a commercially marketed one — those you see advertised on TV. Rather, it opts for a lifestyle which, once begun, will be yours for the rest of  your life. If that sounds like a life sentence, you couldn’t be more wrong. Instead, it’s a life extender and enricher. It’s about controlling how much junk food you eat and making sure eating healthy is your first priority. The perfect diet:

The Perfect Diet

In the Perfect Diet, about 50% of your intake should be “good carbohydrates;” 25% “lean proteins,” of which 1/3 is lean meat, such as fish and white-meat chicken or turkey; and 25% good fats, i.e: not animal fats. Our little pie chart (above) is by no means definitive, but is shown only as a starting point, an example. This is also known as the Mediterranean Diet, which UNESCO recognizes as a Cultural Heritage of Italy, Greece, Spain and Morocco. Here’s a list of Foods to Keep You Fit:

med diet fruit berries  Fresh fruit: 3 or 4 pieces a day. 1 orange. Berries. A piece of fruit for dessert. The in fruits antioxidants are essential to boost immunity and fight heart disease and cancer.

Veggies: a salad with olive oil and lemon juice dressing in your main meal. Tomatoes and tomato products are rich in lycopene. Sauté green beans or zucchini with olive oil and garlic. Avocados reduce bad cholesterol in the blood and lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

AA whole grain bread  Whole grains: whole wheat or whole grain bread with meals. Whole wheat pasta 2-3 times a week. Low in calories; the fiber fills you up.

AA legumes

Legumes: beans, lentils or garbanzos 2-3 times a week to protect against heart disease. Eat with whole grain bread for the perfect protein. Vegetable protein protects the kidneys and  helps prevent breast cancer.

AA assortment-of-nuts  Nuts and Seeds: A handful of nuts or seeds is a great mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack. Nuts are high in mono-unsaturated fat, which does not block arteries. Almonds and walnuts are best.

AA olive oil

Olive Oil: Good for cooking and in salads. It’s why Mediterraneans have so little heart disease. Steer clear of imported olive oil, though. It may not be as labeled.

Fish and Seafood

  Fish and seafood: 2 or 3 times a week. Salmons and sardines are an excellent source of Omega-3 oils, which the body needs.

Garlic and Aromatic herbs: Garlic is the leading reason Mediterraneans have such a low incidence of high blood pressure. It dilates the blood vessel walls.



You’ll notice some overlap between good carbs and lean proteins, and even some between good carbs and good fats. So you see, eating healthfully is quite simple. If you’re confused about why a carbohydrate is good or bad, or which ones are which, see the definition below:

The more sugar you eat the faster you age.

Sugar is NOT an anti-aging food.

You’ve probably heard that refined sugar must be avoided at all costs, and maybe you’ve wondered why. Sugar is a major ingredient in many of the things we love most: birthday cake, cookies, ice cream, candy, soft drinks. It’s also in most of the processed foods at the grocery store, so it’s difficult to avoid. But it’s absolutely terrible for us:

Sugar consumption increases a substance called cortisol — a hormone that actually speeds up the aging process. The more sugar you eat the faster you age. 

That’s not to say that you can never eat a piece of birthday cake or pie, only that you should limit your intake of sugar and refined wheat to  the speed at which you want your body to age.

Junk Food is NOT anti-aging food.

Junk food, according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, is food that is: 
  1. not good for your health because it contains high amounts of fat or sugar.
  2. high in calories but low in nutritional content.
  3. appealing or enjoyable but of little or no real value.

Americans and, increasingly, other populations around the world, are hooked on junk food — “fast food”. It’s:

  • easy
  • quick
  • cheap
  • convenient, and it’s

Junk food is not just what we get from fast food eateries like McDonald’s and Burger King. It’s also the snacks that we pick up at the grocery store that are so appealing: potato chips, candy, cookies, do-nuts, etc., etc., etc. The store is packed with them, and they’re strategically placed to tempt us. Companies such as PepsiCo (Pepsi, Tropicana, Lays Potato Chips, Cheetos, Doritos, Fritos, Mountain Dew, etc.), Coca-Cola (Coca-Cola, Sprite, Flavor Rage, Dannon, Fanta, Fresca, etc.), and Kraft Foods (Jell-O, Cool Whip, Jet-Puffed marshmallows, Cornnuts, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, Velveeta, StoveTop, Kool-Aid, etc.) pay fees for prominent displays and their location on store shelves. They count on your impulse purchases, so they do everything possible to make them irresistible to you.

Presweetened cereals such as Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Honey Smacks, and Frosted Mini-Wheats, are placed two shelves above the bottom, at children’s eye levels. Golden Agers Rock! note: When young children accompany adults to the supermarket, the adults spend up to 50% more. anti-aging food                   In 2010, supermarket chains in the U.S. sold $4.9 billion worth of candy, gum and chocolates, and Walmart sold an additional $4 billion. Candy might make you feel like a kid again, but it makes you old before your time. Some people refer to them as their “guilty pleasures”. We know we shouldn’t eat them, but, oh well, just this once. We look at them and our mouths water. Think of it this way: Every bite adds or deepens a wrinkle. Every bagful robs you of your youth. And it’s not just your skin that’s at risk. Unhealthy foods damage your organs and speed up the over-all aging process.

The closer you stay to original, unprocessed food, the healthier you will be, and the more youthful. Fresh, unprocessed, unpreserved foods are your anti-aging foods. If most of your diet comes from boxes, cans, and sealed, brightly printed plastic bags, your food is making you old. (I’m talking about commercially processed foods that may be loaded with salt, sugar, and preservatives, not home-canned and processed food.) But when you do buy boxed, bagged or canned food, become a label reader. It’s not just about calories. Check the amount of salt, sugar, fat, and preservatives too. Ideally, we’d all have vegetable gardens and grow our own animals for meat.

But we don’t live in an ideal world, so very few of us can have that kind of lifestyle anymore. So the next best thing is to get fresh (organic, if possible) fruit and vegetables of all colors, and lean meat (very limited red meats) at the supermarket or farmer’s market, and do your own cooking and preserving. Include whole grain breads and cereals, and legumes in your diet.
