I’ve had more than one conversation with friends and family about why people love Pinterest. What never ceases to amaze me is how often I hear people who have never really investigated the site say, “I just don’t get it!” I have to admit, that was my initial reaction to Pinterest, too.  On the surface most people think Pinterest is just another social network comprised of pictures that will only waste your time. The problem is… non-users just don’t understand what they are missing.

I’m here to tell you that Pinterest is much more than what you may believe it to be.

So what changed my initial perception of Pinterest? I took the time to investigate what all-the-buzz about Pinterest was all about and boy am I glad that I did! Here’s why I believe Pinterest has become one of the most popular social networks:

#1 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Pictures:

The most obvious, in-your-face aspect of Pinterest is ‘pictures,’ lots and lots of fabulous (and some not so fabulous) pictures. I’d venture to say that Pinterest is a photographer’s online paradise and a great place to showcase their work. Below are a few of my favorite photography pins.

Why People Love Pinterest

From the moment you land on the Pinterest website you are bombarded with images. The visual stimuli jumps right off the page and smacks you right between the eyes. And that’s exactly what draws you in. And once you’re ‘in,’ it won’t be long before you’re hooked! At least that’s how it was for me.

The thing that captures my attention the instant the Pinterest website opens are the vibrant colors. I love color. It makes me happy. The colors of Pinterest are exotic and flirtatious one moment, and in the next can be soft, subtle, muted shades of black and white or something in-between. Your eyes want to dance across the page, lickity-split, in an attempt to take it all in. I urge you to resist that temptation. The rewards of Pinterest unfold when you slow-down and drink-in the mysteries hidden within the images and messages upon the page.

#2 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Sharing:

I love the sharing nature of the passionate people who hangout on Pinterest. Passionate people love to share their hobbies, interests, humor, tips, tricks, recipes, photography and other passions with anyone and everyone who may be interested. When you’re a part of the Pinterest community there is never a shortage of people interested in that which you want to share. Sharing is the primary reason Pinterest has grown into one of the top social sharing sites on the Internet. Pinterest was built to facilitate one’s human desire to share passions.

#3 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Creativity:

I have such deep admiration for all things creative and when I spend time on Pinterest I’m shown all kinds of creativity. And when that creativity is mind-blowing, I get really excited and inquisitive. I often ponder philosophical questions like, “How in the world did they come up with THAT?!” “I wonder what lead them to this discovery.” And more than once I’ve uttered, “Gosh I which I’d thought of that!” That’s three more reasons why I love Pinterest so much. It nurtures my creativity, generates excitement and triggers my inquisitive nature.

These three Pinterest benefits often lead to a deep appreciation for:
a) the person who brought their inspiration into reality and
b) my luck in having the good fortune to have discovered it on Pinterest.

#4 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Inspiration:

I never leave a Pinterest session without taking some form of inspiration with me when I move-on to other things. My favorite form of inspiration comes from the plethora of Favorite Quotes and Sayings that permeate the boards on Pinterest.

One would be hard pressed to be uninspired when the words of Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Maya Angelou, Helen Keller, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Desmond Tutu, Mother Theresa, Dr Suess, and many other wise, known and unknown, persons are readily available.

If you need to brighten your mood, there’s a quote for that.
If you need to be pointed in the right direction, there’s a quote for that.
If you need a quote that’s perfect for the presentation you will be giving on Tuesday, Pinterest has the perfect quote for that, too.

There are quotes about love, pets, marriage, kids, parents and grandparents, work, your boss, politics, government, goals, boredom, the IRS and anything else you can possibly imagine. And there are even quotes about things you can’t even begin to imagine. That is… until you find them on Pinterest!

#5 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Humor:

Sometimes you just gotta laugh and when you need something that will induce laughter you’re bound to find exactly what you need on Pinterest. Laughter is good medicine, right? (You can find all kinds of posts that say just that on countless Pinterest boards that have been posted from all over the world, in many different languages).

I know of no quicker way to turn a rotten mood round than by the infusion of laughter. Laughing just makes you feel better and when I need to laugh, I head for the humor section of Pinterest. Once I arrive, I start reading, laughing and ultimately, pinning. And before I know it, many minutes have passed and if I was in a less than favorable mood when I started… it, too, will have faded into oblivion. This works for me and I’m pretty sure it will work for you, too! Go ahead, give it a try.

#6 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Recipes:

If you like to cook (or just like to eat) you have to check out the recipe boards on Pinterest. Fair warning, it’s a real good idea to make it a practice of eating before going onto Pinterest. That way, when you see all of the mouth-watering desserts and dishes on display, you will be less likely to make a mad-dash to the kitchen for something to eat! Trust me on this one, I speak from personal experience.

Why I Love Pinterest

I’ve built up my recipe collection substantially since becoming a Pinterest enthusiast. I get tired of cooking and eating the same old meals. That’s when I hit the recipe boards looking for inspiration on something new to cook for dinner. I’ve found some fabulous recipes that I classify as ‘keepers.’ And, honestly, a couple of times I’ve come across a dud where the recipe looked and sounded much better than it tasted!

Every time I find a recipe that I think my 8-year old granddaughter will like, especially if it’s a recipe we can make together, I get excited. Bella and I made the Spangled Sandwich Pops (pictured above) for the 4th of July last year. They were a huge hit with everyone and Bella and I had fun making them together! When a craft project or recipe found on Pinterest gives me an opportunity to spend quality time with Bella I couldn’t be happier.

The Garlic Parmesan Edamame and the Summer Veggie Slaw dishes shown above are among my favorite recipes collected from Pinterest. I’ve provided you with the links to all three recipes (below). Bon Appetite!

#7 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Access to the Past, Present and Future:

Another aspect of Pinterest that I find fascinating is that you can find interesting things from the past, present and future from one convenient portal. All you have to do is type the keyword of whatever you’re looking for into the Pinterest search bar, and then hit ‘enter.’ Before you blink twice, spread before you will be an entire collection of images to investigate.

Past – vintage clothing, classic cars – appliances, equipment, hair styles, lunch boxes, games… you name it, Pinterest has it. And for me, I love Pinterest for making things from the past readily available. I happen to love vintage cars and clothing and I’m especially drawn to all things Art Deco. What things from yesteryear do you find interesting?

Present – new products, vacation hot spots, fads, state of the art technology and more are woven throughout Pinterest. I’m very interested in old items being re-purposed for use in unique and interesting ways. And since I haven’t had any difficulty finding these kinds of re-purposed items, I’m quite certain there are lots of other people on Pinterest who share this passion, too.

Future/Futuristic – If you want to get a glimpse of the future along the lines of personal style and clothing, Pinterest has a smorgasbord that will whet your appetite. Or, not! They also feature boards on futuristic automobiles, architecture, jewelry, furniture, home decor, photography and more.

#8 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Nature:

If you love nature, you’ll love the images you’ll find on Pinterest. Pinning images of gardens, flowers, animals and exotic places from around the world occupies the majority of my time while on the Pinterest website. Here are a couple of my favorite nature pictures from my collections.

Machu Picchu is a place I’ve had the pleasure of visiting and it is the one place where I long to return. The “Josie” Dahlia image in the center is a pin that has been very popular on my Pinterest site for about a month now. And the spectacular photo of the tiger (my favorite animal) gives you a pretty good idea of the quality of animal images you’ll discover while hanging out on Pinterest.

#9 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – World Travel:

If you want to learn more about this big, beautiful, wonderful world you will discover spectacular sights on the boards in Pinterest.

In a matter of moments you can be transported to the Australian Outback, the Isle of Santorini (Greece), the Streets of San Francisco, or a hillside in Japan that’s covered in a pink blanket of spring flowers, just to name a few. You can travel all over this amazing planet and never have to leave the comforts of home.

When I’ve had a particularly stressful day, I give myself permission to get lost in Pinterest boards that are dedicated to world travel. The beautiful images introduce me to the wonders of the world that I more than likely will never get to experience firsthand. But while viewing them on Pinterest I am transported to another place and time, in an instant. I stop and allow my mind to imagine what it would be like to be physically present in the fabulous place I’m viewing. I find these ‘mind-travel trips’ extremely invigorating. I highly recommend you treat yourself to an excursion or two. It’s good for the soul.

#10 Reason Why People Love Pinterest – Relaxation:

I find browsing through pins on Pinterest to be extremely relaxing. I work on the computer all day long, often for 12-14 hour shifts. When I can’t think straight anymore, I will hit the Internet and head over to Pinterest for some much deserved ‘Me Time.’

Once I log-on to one of my Pinterest accounts (I have one personal and several business accounts) and I start to look around to see what’s new, I begin to relax and unwind. I don’t have to think, I don’t have to make any major decisions and I don’t have to rush to get something done. On Pinterest I can take my time, bathe my senses in magnificent beauty and simply… chill.

Often while I’m scoping-out new goodies on Pinterest I will also be watching one of my favorite TV shows. An NCIS replay or a first-run episode of The Voice, are prime examples of TV favorites that I experience while surfing Pinterest. I have a mirror positioned on my desk that allows me to see the TV screen while I’m working on the computer! It’s a convenient multi-tasking system that works quite well for me.

I’ve shared my top 10 reasons why people love Pinterest and I’m pretty sure if you give Pinterest a try it won’t take you very long to discover reasons why you love it, too.
